What are legal highs?
Legal highs are chemical substances that are designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs like cocaine and ecstasy. However they are not currently controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Legal highs cannot be sold for human consumption.
Legal Highs are safer than illegal drugs, right?
No. Just because they are technically legal it doesn’t mean these chemicals are safe for human consumption. Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a legal high that is becoming increasingly popular. It gives users a feeling of a ‘rush’ that lasts for up to a few minutes. This ‘rush’ is actually the oxygen to your brain getting cut off. Obviously this is hugely dangerous and some users have even fallen in to a coma as a result of laughing gas.
Some legal highs are the same chemicals used in oven cleaner, do you really want to put that in your body?
What are the other risks?
There is very little research on the long term effects of legal highs. However, if a drug produces the same results as cocaine or ecstasy it is reasonable to expect that it carries the same risk. Remember, legal is not the same as safe.
