Here is the second instalment of our series of real experiences students had with accommodation at university. Visit the Accommodation Fair tomorrow in University Place for free, independent housing advice and a chance to meet some accredited landlords who still have properties available this year! The Fair runs from 10am – 4pm on the ground floor.
“I wouldn’t change my decision to live with people I didn’t know for anything!”
I was in my second year, looking for a house for my third year and I had agreed to live with one of my current housemates and two other girls I had been in halls with. It turned out that my friends from halls had already signed a contract earlier in the year leaving myself and my friend Anna in a bit of a of pickle! I kept hearing that ‘all the best houses are already gone’ or ‘you won’t find anything decent in a good location now, it’s too late!’. Anna suggested that we live with some of her friends that she had made through the Hockey team – I was a little dubious as I was aware that they were a very loud bunch of five girls, one of whom was currently studying in South America, and the others I had never met. Bravely (or stupidly!) I agreed to move in with Anna’s friends and I met four of the girls for the first time at the house viewing (there was no way I could meet the girl in South America). Even though we had only met once (or not at all!) all seven of us signed the contract for the house…and it was my best year at uni! Seven years later and we are all still best friends!
I learnt that you do not need to rush into signing for a house, there are always plenty of houses available so do not feel pressured by your friends or landlords to sign a contract. Also, it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t live with your best friends, you should think of this as an opportunity to make new friends. I wouldn’t change my decision to live with people I didn’t know for anything!
If you haven’t made you mind up about where you want to live, who you want to live with or it seems like you are running out of options, ask a friend if they know anyone looking for a roommate or perhaps you should consider looking on Manchester Student Homes’ Message Board – you might just have your best year in Manchester yet!
